» 2009 Yamaha Apex GT Review
Jul 09, 2008 - 2:21 PM - by Administrator

Yamaha might say that it was the company's RX-1 that made the idea of a performance 4-stroke snowmobile acceptable. We only partially agree. Yes, to us the RX-1 made 4-stroke snowmobiles acceptable, but it was the Yamaha Apex that made 4-stroke snowmobiles believable.

Indeed, if not for online feedback referring to the RX-1 as the 'Yamaha RX-1-Ton,' the Apex nomenclature may never have surfaced. But because of the hefty negative online forum feedback about the RX-1's weight, Yamaha decided to do away with the old name and find a new descriptor for what would be a much more sprightly sled with rider-forward ergonomics, more 4-stroke engine response and, yes, less weight.

» 2009 Polaris 600 IQ Shift 136 Review
Jul 09, 2008 - 2:21 PM - by Administrator

Last season Polaris introduced us all to its value sled concept, the basic Shift. A singular basic model built around the newer componentry of the popular IQ models, the 600 IQ Shift was designed to accessorize.

Polaris’ idea of providing an entry vehicle with a tempting price point was savvy. Especially when you realized that the Minnesota-based snowmobile pioneer made Shift-specific accessories available through its Pure Polaris parts catalog. You could transform the basic Shift into your own personal sled with graphics packages, touring add-ons, or sport rider necessities like handlebar risers. The basic Shift comes with the right ingredients, like the base IQ chassis and the popular 600cc Liberty twin.

The 600 IQ Shift was the beginning. For model year 2009, there is a fleet of Shift models, including the... [Read More]

» 2009 Arctic Cat F570 Review
Jul 09, 2008 - 2:20 PM - by Administrator

When it comes to value snowmobiles, Arctic Cat's 2009 F570 fan-cooled twin should be at the top. At US$6,499 the F570 is not the least expensive full-sized snowmobile, that honor falls to Polaris' basic 550 IQ Shift. The air-cooled Arctic Cat powerplant will be about equal to every other fan-cooled budget sled. But when it comes to best overall value based on competency, trail capabilities, ride and handling, the 2009 F570 leads the value parade.

What makes this 2009 fan-cooled a real trail sled value comes from the sum of its parts. The F570 shares the same Twin Spar design as the top-dollar Turbo Z1. We'll admit that it's taken us a bit to fully appreciate the Twin Spar design in comparison to other ride-forward designs on the market. Maybe it was because Arctic Cat was a little late to the rider-forward movement or maybe we just... [Read More]

» 2009 Ski-Doo MXZ 550X Review
Jul 09, 2008 - 2:19 PM - by Administrator

Let's face it, the 2009 Ski-Doo MXZ 550X is one generation removed from being a truly great buy. At US$6,599 the fan-cooled 550X version in Ski-Doo’s popular MXZ model line probably has one season left in its current form. But, even now, if you can pop for another 700 bucks and move to the 2009 MXZ Trail, we’d say do it. That’s hard for us to say because not only do we truly enjoy the fan-cooled 550, but also we own a 2006 version.

Because we own an older 550 fan-cooled, we recognized the hard truth that the 2009 version is not that much different from the 2006 MXZ 550X that we own. What we have enjoyed most has been the absolute joy we got from riding the 550X. At 435 pounds it has been one of the lightest sleds on the market. You can toss it into the turns with total abandon, feeing confident that its dual runner Pilot 5.7 skis... [Read More]

» 2009 Yamaha Phazer RTX Review
Jul 09, 2008 - 2:19 PM - by Administrator

Here's the deal, the 2009 Yamaha Phazer RTX provides quite a bang for its US$7,699 price tag. It has a happy revving 4-stroke twin with state of the art electronic fuel injection. Fox brand Float Shocks are standard to control 9.3-inches of front travel. There’s the digital readout on the electronic multi-function gauge that you’ve come to expect from Yamaha's 21st century snowmobiles. Key start and pushbutton reverse are standard.

So, why are we disappointed in this nifty little Yammie? Were our expectations for this lightweight 4-stroker just too high? Is it us or is it the product? We think both.
